Welcome to Dunning Golf Club’s sustainability page!
Here, you will find information about the part that we are playing to fulfil the pledge that we have signed through the collaboration between Scottish Golf and the Geo Foundation.
Golf Club Sustainability Pledge
Golf has an important opportunity and responsibility to help address some of the defining environmental and social issues of our time. That is why we are committed to:
- Fostering nature
- Conserving resources
- Strengthening communities
- Taking climate action
We will also strive to use our reach and influence to raise awareness and stimulate wider positive action amongst golfers, fans and the wider public. Making a meaningful contribution in sustainability, in and through the sport of golf.
Here is a summary of what we have done thus far at Dunning:
- commenced the compilation of our online sustainability profile which will form our baseline position. Members of the committee will update this regularly to reflect the measures that we take to improve our position in line with the 4 main areas indicated above
- removed the white stones in the flowerbed near the 3rd green and planted of 50 native heathers
- liaised with Brian Boag from the Tayside Bat Society to undertake an appraisal of the bat boxes around the course. Brian has reported that there are 27 boxes and that we definitely have long eared and pipistrelle bats. We are awaiting his full report on the condition of the boxes and we are hoping to organise a bat walk in summer 2027 to formally identify which species are on site (see below).
- agreed with the Head Greenkeeper that there will be designated areas of rough where wildlife can be allowed to flourish. Furthermore, there will be a reduction in the use of weedkiller around the flower bed by the 3rd green and also that by the 1st tee
Report from the Bat Appraisal
- Checked the boxes which we could find and found only 3 bats in box 22.
- 99% sure they were Pipistrelle bats but do not know which species.
- Did not find boxes 17 and 18 due to ivy we think.
- Found bat poo in virtually all the other bat boxes and the remains of a wasps nest which virtually filled the box.
- We roughly cleared out all the boxes.
- We brought back a box with was broken and needs a new front
